VICTORIA’S BIG BUILD CONNECTING THE WEST

06 October 2022

Melbourne’s west is growing fast, and we need to keep investing in infrastructure to support the increased population.

The Metro Tunnel, Melbourne Airport Rail, West Gate Tunnel Project and upgrades to local roads will significantly improve the way locals get around each day by reducing travel times, improving safety and reliability.

The Metro Tunnel:

Untangling the City Loop means more trains, more often – making travel easier for you with more frequent trains carrying more people to destinations across Melbourne.

Some of Melbourne’s busiest metropolitan train lines will run exclusively through the new tunnel. By taking these lines out of the City Loop, other lines will be able to run more services.

As a result, room will be created on the network to enable over half a million additional passengers per week across Melbourne's train network to use the rail system during the peak periods. This means we’ll be able to run more trains across the west.

Melbourne Airport Rail:

Running Melbourne Airport Rail services through the Metro Tunnel will maximise airport access for all Victorians, providing easy and seamless routes from all metropolitan and regional train lines.

When complete alongside the Airport Rail Project, trains will run through Sunshine and the Metro Tunnel providing passengers with a 10-minute turn-up-and-go service from Melbourne Airport and a continuous journey into the CBD in around 30 minutes.

This will mean:

✅ A train every three minutes from Sunshine station to the city during peak hour

✅ 11 minutes from Sunshine to the Airport

✅ 13 minutes from Sunshine to Melb Uni

✅ 16 minutes from Sunshine to the CBD

✅ Travel time savings of up to 40 minutes a day

Albion Station Rebuild:

Albion station will also be rebuilt to become a modern and accessible station – providing an important boost to this growing precinct, as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project. The new station is part of getting the Sunbury line ready for the extra trains that will run when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.

West Gate Tunnel Project:

More than 200,000 vehicles rely on the West Gate Bridge every day – and as anyone in the West would know, a single incident can wreak havoc on our daily commute.

The West Gate Tunnel project will help combat this as an alternative route that cuts congestion and commute times while also providing a dedicated link to the port for truck.
