WYNDHAM FOOTBALL STADIUM TAKES ANOTHER BIG STRIDE

22 January 2021

The Victorian Government has cleared the way for a new home stadium for A-League team Western United Football Club to be developed on land at Tarneit.
The Planning Minister has approved an amendment to the Wyndham Planning Scheme to facilitate the development and construction of a 15,000-seat privately funded stadium and associated mixed-use development in partnership with the Wyndham City Council and The Western Melbourne Group.
Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly MP said the latest progress is great news and an important development for the sporting community in Melbournes West.
Amendment C254 to the Wyndham Planning Scheme allows for the use and development of the land, which is owned by Wyndham City Council and is the first step in paving the way for the new stadium.
The next step is the approval of a Concept Master Plan by the Minister for Planning, followed by the final approval and implementation of detailed plans by the Wyndham City Council.
This amendment means the Western Melbourne Group and Wyndham City Council can now move forward with the development of the stadium.
The stadium will be home to the local A-League Football team, Western United Football Club, and include a commercial, residential and sports training precinct development on the land at 1160 Sayers Road, Tarneit.
The proposed development will be completed in stages with the stadium anticipated to be operational by late next year. The economic benefits to Victoria have been calculated to be $147 million through construction activities and net visitor spending of $4 million in Year 1 of operations. In addition to construction employment, the project will create 125 ongoing full time jobs.
